Rubén Acuña González Performs Alongside Music Legends Yuja Wang and Yannick Nézet-Séguin

On April 26, 2025, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra presented the spectacular finale to its historic centennial season at Philadelphia’s Marian Anderson Hall. The highly anticipated concert, titled “Yuja Wang Plays Rautavaara,” featured the globally celebrated pianist and Curtis alumna Yuja Wang, under the baton of the illustrious conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Among the exceptional young musicians on stage was percussionist Rubén Acuña González, contributing his talent to this landmark event.

The evening’s program was a showcase of immense power and sublime beauty. The centerpiece was Einojuhani Rautavaara’s explosive and romantic Piano Concerto No. 1, a tour de force performance by Yuja Wang that captivated the audience. The orchestra also shone in a program of French masterpieces, including Lili Boulanger’s vibrant D’un matin de printemps (“Of a Spring Morning”), Ravel’s sumptuous song cycle Shéhérazade, and Debussy’s atmospheric masterpiece, La mer.

As a member of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra’s percussion section, Rubén played a crucial role in shaping the sonic landscape of these complex and colorful works. From providing the subtle textures in Debussy’s impressionism to delivering the powerful rhythmic drive in the Rautavaara concerto, his performance was integral to the ensemble’s success.

Sharing the stage with luminaries like Yuja Wang and Yannick Nézet-Séguin is a remarkable experience that highlights the world-class education and unparalleled performance opportunities offered at the Curtis Institute of Music. For Rubén, this concert marks another significant step in his professional journey, performing demanding repertoire alongside the biggest names in classical music.
