Rubén's Bio

Rubén Acuña González is a versatile percussionist and timpanist whose artistry spans solo, chamber, orchestral, and experimental performance. A native of Tampico, Tamaulipas, his musical journey took a pivotal turn in 2011 when he moved to The Woodlands, Texas. It was here that he began to cultivate his passion for percussion, immersing himself in the state’s rich musical education landscape and laying the groundwork for his future career. This bicultural foundation has profoundly shaped his unique musical voice and perspective.

Currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music as an Edward B. Garrigues Fellow, Rubén studies under the renowned percussionists Don Liuzzi, Eric Millstein, and Ji-Su Jung. He previously earned his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with high honors and a minor in Arts Management and Administration.

Rubén has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the U.S., including Carnegie Hall, the Kravis Center, and Geffen Hall, collaborating with world-class conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Teddy Abrams. His dedication to contemporary and collaborative music has led him to premiere original works, participate in experimental concerts, and work directly with composers such as Gabriela Ortiz, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Sebastian Zhang. Furthering his orchestral career, he was recently named Principal Timpanist of the renowned Symphony in C for the 2025-2026 season.

Beyond performance, Rubén is deeply engaged in arts leadership and education. He has interned at KMFA Radio Station and the Beerthoven Concert Series, where he combined music with community outreach and creative planning. As a private instructor, he inspires students to explore phrasing, creativity, and technique across solo, orchestral, and marching percussion. Rubén has taught front ensemble marching percussion at some of the best programs in the nation, such as Stony Point HS, North Shore HS, and The Woodlands HS.

Fluent in Spanish and English, Rubén has received numerous honors, including the UT Distinguished College Scholar Award and top placements in national and international percussion competitions such as the Tierras Percussion Competition.
