Performing Raven Chacon's "Tremble Staves" at Laguna Gloria

On October 13, 2023, the shores of the Colorado River became the stage for a profound artistic experience: a site-responsive adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon’s work, “Tremble Staves.” This unique event, held at The Contemporary Austin – Laguna Gloria, was a major collaboration between several leading arts organizations.

This ambitious performance was presented by The Contemporary Austin in partnership with Texas Performing Arts, Fusebox, and The University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music Percussion Ensemble.

A Site-Specific Story of Land and Water

Originally conceived for the Sutro Baths in San Francisco, “Tremble Staves” is designed to tell a story of the specific land where it is performed, focusing on themes of water’s sanctity and scarcity. The Laguna Gloria performance was held in conjunction with the museum’s group exhibition, “This Land,” which reflected on the concept of landscape.

The piece featured the acclaimed Bay Area duo The Living Earth Show (Travis Andrews and Andy Meyerson) and an original narrative written and performed by Austin-based artist Virginia Grise, creating a powerful multidisciplinary dialogue.

A Prestigious Collaboration

The immersive soundscape of “Tremble Staves” was brought to life by a unique combination of musicians. The core duo was supported by the percussive force of the UT Butler School of Music Percussion Ensemble, of which Rubén Acuña González was a key member.

Participating in a high-profile, curated artistic event like this is a significant experience, blending music, narrative, and environmental art. The collaboration required adaptability and a deep understanding of experimental performance, highlighting the ensemble’s role in Austin’s vibrant cultural scene. This powerful performance was a testament to collaborative art and its ability to connect with a specific time and place.
