Ruben Acuña González Featured in the Vibrant Premiere of "para-parakeet"
The contemporary chamber music scene was recently enriched by the premiere of “para-parakeet,” an advanced percussion quartet composed by Sebastian Zhang. The piece, written for the prestigious University of Texas Percussion Ensemble, was performed for the first time on October 29th, 2023, at Bates Recital Hall, featuring a standout performance by percussionist Rubén Acuña González.
Alongside his colleagues Ethan Hall, Dan Hartung, and Caroline Richards, Acuña González brought to life a unique work born from the composer’s strange and unexpected encounter with parakeets. The title, a play on words that Zhang himself describes as “very silly,” evokes both the diminutive reduplication found in Mandarin and the rhythmic terminology of the “para-paradiddle,” setting a playful tone from the very beginning.
Musically, “para-parakeet” is an amalgam of influences ranging from math rock and jazz fusion to video game boss themes and the contemporary percussion repertoire. The composition challenges its performers with a complex rhythmic structure, centered on the interplay of the number eleven over a standard 4/4 time signature, creating intricate and fascinating soundscapes.
Rubén Acuña González’s performance was fundamental in weaving this complex rhythmic tapestry. His skill and musicality across a variety of instruments, including the glockenspiel and the marimba, were key to conveying the energy and precision the work demands. The inclusion of body percussion, inspired by its use in pop music, added a visual and sonic layer that captivated the audience.
The premiere of “para-parakeet” not only marked the arrival of a new and exciting piece to the percussion repertoire but also reaffirmed the talent of young performers like Rubén Acuña González, whose performance significantly contributed to the evening’s success.
